The Functions of the National Police Service in Kenya

Article 243 of the Constitution establishes the National Police Service in Kenya. The creation of the National Police Service is provided for further by the National Police Service Act and the National Police Service Commission Act.

The National Police Service is a national service and shall function throughout Kenya.

The functions of the National Police Service in Kenya

The objectives and functions of the National Police Service are under Article 244 of the Kenyan Constitution. The National Police Service shall–

  • strive for the highest standards of professionalism and discipline among its members;
  • prevent corruption and promote and practise transparency and accountability;
  • comply with constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms;
  • train staff to the highest possible standards of competence and integrity and to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and dignity; and
  • foster and promote relationships with the broader society.

  • the National Police Service is under the independent command of the Inspector General of Police.
  • the Kenya Police Service (KPS), the Administrative Police Service (APS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are each headed by a Deputy Inspector General.
